Bulgaria leads global battery energy storage markets
Bulgaria has emerged as a leading global market for battery energy storage, according to an analysis by the energy think-tank Ember. The country's rapid expansion in this sector has allowed it to surpass other significant markets, including Chile and Australia, in terms of growth rates.
In 2025, Bulgaria added approximately 3 GWh of new battery storage capacity, a significant increase from nearly zero capacity the previous year. By May 2026, the total installed capacity had doubled to reach 8.6 GWh. This development was driven by government funding and simplified authorization processes.
The integration of battery technology is fundamentally changing the role of solar energy in Bulgaria's power system. While solar energy had no contribution to evening electricity demand in the first half of 2023, by the first half of 2026, the combination of solar and battery storage covered an average of 24% of the country's electricity demand between 19:00 and 21:00. Additionally, stored solar energy provided approximately 10% of total electricity consumption between 19:00 and 07:00.
