Bulgaria energy outlook: Carbon quotas may raise fuel costs
Bulgaria faces potential increases in transport and heating costs due to the implementation of carbon quotas. Tsvetomir Nikolov, an analyst at the Center for Democracy Research (CID), noted that Bulgaria's heavy reliance on fossil fuels makes the country highly vulnerable to global price shocks. He suggested that carbon pricing serves as a fiscal tool that could provide revenue for supporting vulnerable households and investing in energy efficiency.
Despite concerns regarding fuel costs, MEP Tsvetelina Penkova stated that Bulgaria's energy system remains stable. She does not anticipate electricity shortages or price hikes in the coming months, citing the country's diverse energy mix, which includes nuclear, coal, and renewable sources. Penkova highlighted that previous measures, such as diversifying gas supplies through Greek interconnectors and Azerbaijani natural gas, have strengthened the nation's preparedness compared to countries more dependent on imported natural gas.
