Bulgarian household economic pressures

Bulgarian households are experiencing increased financial pressure due to rising costs for utilities, fuel, and food. While annual inflation was reported at 4.5% in July, the accumulation of smaller price increases in sectors such as housing, water, electricity, and gas is expected to impact family budgets as temperatures drop.

Eurostat data highlights that Bulgarian households allocate a significantly higher portion of their income to food and non-alcoholic beverages—22.3%—compared to the European Union average of 16.3%. The three largest expenditure categories, including food, housing, and transport, account for 46.5% of total household spending. Specifically, transport accounts for 14.3% and housing, water, and energy for 9.9% of Bulgarian expenditures.

Regional comparisons show similar pressures in Serbia, where the combined share of food, housing, and transport in household consumption reaches 61.7%, exceeding the EU average by over 15 percentage points. In Serbia, food and beverage spending accounts for 36.6% of personal consumption, which is more than double the EU average.

In response to these economic conditions, financial experts have warned of rising credit risks. Although Bulgaria maintains some of the lowest mortgage and consumer loan interest rates in Europe, banks are reportedly tightening creditworthiness assessments, which may lead to increased loan rejections for applicants with insufficient financial status.
