Bulgaria faces economic and security risks amid energy shifts
Geopolitical analyst Panayot Borislavov has warned that Bulgaria may be among the first to suffer from recent geopolitical shifts. Speaking on Eurocom TV, Borislavov criticized the Bulgarian government's stance regarding a diesel supply deal between the United States and Russia, labeling the support for such agreements as ‘cheap PR’ because Bulgaria cannot benefit from cheaper fuels while maintaining sanctions against Moscow.
Borislavov highlighted a significant discrepancy in European Union spending, noting that while the EU has provided approximately 250 billion euros in aid to Ukraine, it has paid over 320 billion euros to Russia for energy resources over the last four years. He characterized the current situation for Europe and Bulgaria as an ‘economic third world war,’ predicting that rising costs for food, gas, and heating will lead to a difficult winter.
Furthermore, concerns were raised regarding security in the Black Sea region. Borislavov noted that Bulgaria lacks adequate surveillance and defense capabilities against drones and missiles, pointing to ongoing maritime incidents in the area.
