Bulgaria faces rising food inflation and obesity crisis
Bulgaria is facing significant economic and public health challenges, according to recent data. Between 2.9 and 3.4 million Bulgarians—more than half the population—are currently classified as overweight or obese. Arkadi Sharkov of the Coalition Against Obesity noted that obesity-related illnesses contribute to approximately 12,900 deaths annually, with one in five deaths occurring in individuals under 65. The economic impact is substantial, with public healthcare expenditures reaching 767 million euros, representing 0.66% of the country's GDP, while the total loss in welfare is estimated at 6.4 billion euros.
Simultaneously, the country has experienced a severe cost-of-living surge. Eurostat data reveals that food prices in Bulgaria have risen by 85% over the last decade, significantly outpacing the EU average of approximately 50%. Notable increases include a 131% rise in bread prices and a doubling of egg prices. Other sectors have also seen sharp inflation: housing, electricity, water, and gas have increased by 65%, while education costs have risen by over 70%. In contrast, healthcare and clothing costs have seen increases below the EU average.
