Bulgaria demographic, economic, and health challenges
Overview
Bulgaria continues to face severe demographic, economic, and public health challenges. Demographic trends show a significant decline, with the population falling to 6,423,207 by late 2025. This 0.22% annual decrease was driven by a natural decrease of 49,238 people, as deaths (99,479) significantly outpaced live births (50,241). Every region in the country reported more deaths than births. The population is aging rapidly, with an average age of 45.4 years; individuals aged 65 and older comprise 24.3% of the population, while those under 15 account for only 13.9%. This imbalance results in only 75 people entering the workforce for every 100 exiting it. Regional disparities persist, as the Sofia region concentrates economic activity while 192 settlements remain entirely uninhabited. New projections from Eurostat’s EUROPOP2025 suggest the population could fall below 5 million by the end of the century. In response, presidential candidates have proposed various solutions: Stoyanka Cherkezova is running on a platform to address depopulation, while Ivaylo Simeonov advocates for ‘bytov mir’ (everyday peace), focusing on stability through guaranteed access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Economic data shows mixed results. While the IMF previously lowered growth forecasts, updated data from the National Statistical Institute shows Bulgaria's GDP reached 116,548.5 million euros in 2025, recording a real growth rate of 3.0%. The service sector remains the dominant driver, with significant growth in construction (6.8%), professional services (6.5%), and IT (6.1%), while the industrial sector saw a 5% decline. Regarding fiscal health, Bulgaria's government debt reached 34.797 billion euros by the end of 2025, representing 29.9% of the GDP. The government sector reported a budget deficit of 4.664 billion euros, or 4.0% of the GDP, exceeding the European Union's 3% threshold.
