Bulgaria food prices rise as wheat and diesel costs climb
Wholesale prices for essential food items in Bulgaria have seen significant increases in certain regions. Between September 7 and 11, 2026, type 500 flour in Pleven rose by 37.5%, jumping from 1.60 to 2.20 euros per kilogram. Other regional increases were noted in Kerdzhali, Vratsa, Smolyan, and Haskovo for flour and sunflower oil. Dairy products, including cheese and kashkaval, also experienced price hikes in regions like Kerdzhali and Sliven, while frozen chicken prices rose in Sofia.
Producers warn that rising wheat and diesel prices may lead to higher bread costs this autumn. While bread prices increased only 1.1% annually through August, the FAO cereal price index rose 2.2% in August, with wheat prices up 15% compared to the previous year. Factors contributing to these pressures include the war in Ukraine, Black Sea export challenges, climate change, and high demand. While Bulgaria's harvest of 6.5 to 6.8 million tons is sufficient for domestic needs, the cost of diesel, electricity, transport, and labor remains a critical concern for bakers.
