Bulgaria heatwave increases cardiovascular risks
Bulgaria is experiencing intense heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists predict these high temperatures will persist until at least August 18, with a brief cooling period followed by a return to temperatures between 34 and 35 degrees in early September.
Medical experts, including cardiologist Assoc. Prof. Krasiemira Hristova, warn that temperatures exceeding 33-35 degrees Celsius significantly increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmia, and loss of consciousness. These risks are particularly high for individuals with hypertension or cardiovascular diseases due to blood vessel expansion and dehydration caused by heavy sweating. Heatstroke can lead to dangerous changes in blood pressure and heart rate, potentially resulting in pulmonary embolism.
Health professionals advise patients with heart conditions to consult their doctors to adjust medication for the summer rather than stopping treatments independently. To mitigate risks, physical activity is recommended only in the early morning before 10:00 or in the evening after 18:00-19:00, avoiding the most intense sun exposure.
