Bulgaria faces extreme heatwave with yellow weather warnings

Bulgaria is experiencing a significant heatwave, with the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) issuing a yellow warning for dangerous temperatures across all 28 regions. Daytime highs are expected to reach between 33°C and 38°C, with Sofia seeing temperatures around 34°C.

Medical professionals are warning of potential health risks, including heatstroke, particularly for the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. Emergency services in Sofia have already reported multiple calls related to the extreme heat.

A weather shift is expected starting Thursday as cooler air from the northeast moves in. This transition will bring increased instability, including potential thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hail, particularly in southwestern Bulgaria, the Thracian Plain, and mountainous regions. Additionally, a yellow code has been issued for strong winds along the Black Sea coast.
