Bulgaria implements traffic restrictions amid holiday road accidents

Bulgaria is experiencing heavy traffic congestion and multiple road accidents during the final day of a holiday weekend. To facilitate movement toward Sofia, the Road Infrastructure Agency and police have implemented emergency measures, including a ban on heavy trucks over 12 tons on the Hemus, Trakia, and Struma motorways, as well as road I-1 in the Blagoevgrad region, between 12:00 and 20:00.

Several significant accidents have disrupted travel. A three-car collision on the Hemus motorway near Elin Pelin caused long queues and left one 55-year-old man in critical condition at St. Anna Hospital in Sofia. Additionally, chain collisions on the Trakia motorway near Karnobat and other locations have contributed to significant delays.

Road police report that while there were no fatalities in the last 24 hours, there were 18 serious accidents resulting in 2 deaths and 22 injuries across the country. Authorities are maintaining high visibility to monitor speed, alcohol, and drug use, noting that while aggressive driving has decreased, traffic remains intense at border crossings with Turkey and Greece.
