Balkan road safety – late July‑early Aug 2026
Entities: Trakia highway (A1) · Struma highway (A3) · Trakia Motorway · Burgas · Podgorica
Overview
Bulgaria continued its temporary ban on trucks over 12 tonnes on the Trakia (A1) and Struma (A3) motorways and the Kresna Pass section of road I‑1 on Sunday 2 August, restricting traffic from 15:30 to 22:00 in both directions. The same exemptions apply (passenger‑transport, hazardous‑material, livestock, perishable, temperature‑controlled, rescue and road‑maintenance vehicles). Drivers to Burgas are rerouted via the I‑6 “Podbalkan” road, while traffic toward the Kula border uses the II‑19, III‑198 and III‑198‑1 corridor, with lane allocations favouring Sofia‑bound flow. Real‑time traffic updates remain available on the agency’s interactive maps.
In Montenegro, police units from Podgorica and Danilovgrad maintained a digital patrol using drones over the high‑risk sections of the Podgorica‑Zeta, Podgorica‑Cetinje and Danilovgrad‑Nikšić routes. The operation stopped 21 drivers, issued 14 tickets and filed seven summons for serious offences such as risky overtaking. Serbian traffic police likewise intercepted three reckless drivers within 24 hours – two exceeding 240 km/h and one drunk at 207 km/h – and cited 11 additional motorists for serious violations, reiterating that speed breaches are the leading cause of severe accidents and pledging continued intensified controls.
