Bulgaria and France to establish Black Sea security hub

Bulgaria and France are collaborating to establish a Black Sea security hub with bases in Varna, Bulgaria, and Constanta, Romania. Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced the initiative, which is part of a strategic European approach to protect the region's eastern flank against hybrid and cyber threats.

The Varna base is expected to be located at the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy. The project aims to expand infrastructure and develop mechanisms for processing collected maritime information. Petrova emphasized the importance of European Union and French financial support for the initiative, noting that the Black Sea is increasingly becoming a zone of military activity due to recent attacks on commercial vessels.

In response to regional tensions, the Bulgarian military has mobilized its resources, including the Air Force, Land Forces, Navy, and Special Forces. Air Force Commander Major General Nikolay Rusev confirmed increased patrols over the Black Sea, though he noted that current radar systems face limitations in detecting low-flying objects. New radar systems and IRIS-T missile complexes are expected within 1.5 years to enhance defensive capabilities.
