Balkans face extreme heat, storms, and widespread wildfires

The Balkan region is facing severe weather and fire emergencies. In Bulgaria, a heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 37°C is being accompanied by a yellow code warning for intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and potential hail in many provinces.

North Macedonia is experiencing a critical wildfire situation. Stojanče Angelov, Director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, reported over 15 active fires, with two threatening residential areas. Firefighters successfully prevented flames from reaching homes in Strumica, while other major fires are being fought in Prilep, Želino, and Mavrovo and Rostuše.

In the Republika Srpska region, firefighters and helicopters are battling an active fire at the Obodina landfill and in the Zubački plateau area. Additionally, approximately 300 personnel are deployed to control a large forest fire near the village of Bigla between Makedonska Kamenica and Delčevo.
