Bulgaria issues yellow weather code for intensive rainfall
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a yellow weather code for intensive rainfall and thunderstorms in six Bulgarian regions: Sofia, Sofia-region, Montana, Pernik, Kyustendil, and Blagoevgrad. While much of the country will experience sunny weather with temperatures between 30°C and 35°C, mountainous areas may see localized showers and thunderstorms.
In a broader context regarding extreme weather, Prof. Emil Gachev from the Institute for Research on Climate, Atmosphere and Waters at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences noted that climate change is increasing the risk of natural disasters. He highlighted how rising temperatures cause permafrost to melt, destabilizing mountain structures and glaciers, as seen in recent events in Nepal.
Additionally, a long-term climatological study by NIMH covering the period from 1991 to 2020 found that the most dangerous rain showers in Bulgaria are frequently caused by low-pressure areas with air transport from the east or northeast, rather than exclusively from Mediterranean cyclones. The study emphasizes how Bulgaria's specific mountain relief plays a critical role in intensifying these precipitation events.
