Balkans weather shifts as cold fronts and El Niño influence region

The Balkan region is experiencing significant meteorological shifts. In Bulgaria, a cold atmospheric front is bringing lower temperatures, increased cloudiness, and wind. High-altitude areas may see snow, with temperatures in the mountains dropping significantly.

In North Macedonia, recent data shows August 2026 was extremely hot and dry, with average temperatures 2.7 degrees above the 1991–2020 average and precipitation 67 percent below the norm. Experts note the strengthening El Niño phenomenon, which has a high probability of becoming a very strong event during the 2026/27 winter. While El Niño's impact on Europe is complex, it may lead to increased risks of intense, localized heavy rainfall and flooding following the recent summer drought.

Broader European forecasts indicate a transition toward autumn, with Arctic air potentially causing temperature drops of 10 to 15 degrees in parts of the Balkans, including Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, and Bulgaria.
