Bulgaria leads in energy storage capacity and grid stability
Bulgaria has become a world leader in the proportion of electrical energy storage capacity relative to its grid. With over 12,000 megawatts of capacity, the country ranks third in Europe behind Germany and Italy, despite having a significantly smaller economy and power grid.
This storage capability provides high grid stability. During a total national blackout, Bulgaria's infrastructure can maintain operations for 2.5 hours, compared to just 15 minutes in Romania. The country can store one-third of its energy production in batteries, while half of its generation comes from solar power.
This capacity offers a buffer for neighboring regions during extreme weather. While low water levels have forced shutdowns at nuclear plants in Hungary and Romania and reduced hydropower output in Serbia, Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear plant remained operational due to lower water intake points. Tamás Hiezl, president of the Association of Hungarian Energy Traders (MEKSZ), noted that Bulgaria's storage allows it to assist countries facing energy shortages during specific heatwave windows.
