Bulgaria limits 12‑ton trucks on Trakia, Struma and I‑1 routes this weekend

On Friday, 7 August, and Sunday, 9 August, Bulgaria will restrict the movement of heavy trucks over 12 tonnes in both directions on the Trakia (A1) and Struma (A3) motorways and on road I‑1 through the Kresna Gorge. The Friday restriction runs from 16:00 to 23:00, and the Sunday restriction from 15:30 to 22:00.

The measure aims to improve road safety by reducing the risk of accidents caused by improper overtaking and by preventing long queues of heavy vehicles during peak travel periods. Drivers of trucks over 12 t traveling to or from Burgas may use the alternative Sub‑Balkan road I‑6, while traffic to and from the Kresna border crossing can be diverted via route II‑19 (Simitli – Gotse Delchev) and connecting roads.

Exemptions apply to vehicles over 12 t that provide passenger transport, carry hazardous materials, live animals, fast‑perishable food, temperature‑controlled cargo, or specialized rescue and road‑maintenance equipment. Reversible traffic will be implemented on the I‑1 segment near Simitli, with lane allocations adjusted to favour traffic toward Banitsa and other tourist areas. Traffic flow is continuously monitored and additional reversible measures may be introduced if needed.
