Bulgaria mountain rescue warns of heat as child rescued on Botev peak

The Mountain Rescue Service of the Bulgarian Red Cross said that overall conditions for mountain tourism across Bulgaria are good, but hot weather is expected. Sunny skies dominate most ranges, with moderate winds in the Stara Planina and Pirin regions. In parts of Rila, around Musala peak, and on Vitosha near Cherni Vrah, higher cloud cover and fog are reported.

Rescuers urged tourists to stay well hydrated, wear hats, use sunscreen, and dress in light, breathable clothing. They emphasized staying on marked trails and, if caught in rain or thunderstorms, to descend promptly, avoid sheltering under isolated trees or open bivouacs, remove metal objects and switch off phones. The advice follows a recent incident on Botev peak in Stara Planina where a 14‑year‑old suffered severe exhaustion and possible hypoglycaemia, requiring emergency assistance from a medical helicopter. The child was air‑lifted to a hospital in Sofia and is reported to be in good condition.
