Bulgaria proposes 2027 budget with wage and pension increases

Bulgaria has submitted its 2027 budget plan to the European Commission and Eurogroup, focusing on fiscal consolidation and social support. The plan aims to reduce the budget deficit and decrease new state debt compared to 2025 and 2026 levels.

Key social measures include a proposed increase in the minimum monthly wage to 660 euros, though some officials and unions have advocated for higher amounts, such as 690 euros. The budget also projects an 8% increase in pensions and significant boosts to family support. Specifically, one-time birth assistance is expected to rise by over 56%, and maternity benefits for the second year are set to reach 450 euros. Monthly child allowances may increase by 16% to 19%.

In the public sector, salaries are planned to rise by 5%, with teacher salaries seeing a 7.5% increase. The budget also allocates funds for defense and security, including air defense systems and anti-drone technology. While the government seeks to balance social spending with fiscal responsibility, the plan faces scrutiny regarding its ability to meet EU deficit targets and the adequacy of wage increases in the face of inflation.
