Bulgarian social assistance and economic reforms
Overview
Bulgaria has implemented several social assistance measures for vulnerable citizens. In early September 2026, the government approved heating assistance for over 240,000 citizens and families for the 2026/2027 winter season. This support, totaling approximately 321.95 euros per recipient, is distributed in two installments.
Following this, the government announced a Christmas financial bonus of approximately 50 euros for roughly 500,000 vulnerable citizens. These payments are now legally guaranteed through the State Budget Act to prevent discretionary political decisions. The Social Assistance Agency will distribute these funds automatically.
Beyond these specific payments, the Bulgarian government is considering broader economic reforms, including a proposed minimum wage increase of approximately 40 euros starting in January, pension formula revisions, and new incentives for young families.
