Bulgaria plans 1,300 km of road infrastructure and water projects for 2027

Bulgaria’s Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works has announced plans to design approximately 1,300 km of road infrastructure by 2027. This includes 770 km of strategic sections, such as the Ruse–Makaza motorway, the Sofia–Montana expressway with a tunnel under Petrohan, and the Black Sea motorway connecting Durankulak, Varna, Burgas, and Malko Tarnovo.

Minister Ivan Shishkov emphasized that the focus is on comprehensive design to address the country’s historical lack of integrated motorway planning. For major routes, the government intends to seek public-private partnerships or European TEN-T network funding rather than relying solely on direct state payments. Other priority projects include the Rila motorway, the Vidin–Montana–Vratsa connections, and improvements to the Ruse–Shumen and Plovdiv–Smolyan routes.

In addition to transport, the ministry plans to address water infrastructure through 40 projects aimed at improving water supply and drinking water quality. Approximately 47 million euros are expected to be allocated for pre-project and pre-investment studies and the design of new water supply facilities and pipelines.
