Bulgaria records over 2,600 truck violations in one week

Between 30 June and 6 July 2026, Bulgarian authorities documented 2 673 infractions committed by heavy‑goods vehicles, including 2 145 illegal overtakes in prohibited lanes, 399 unpaid tolls, 107 overloaded trucks, 15 seat‑belt violations and 7 entries into emergency lanes.

Road‑safety expert Diana Rusinova captured video on the Sofia ring road showing dozens of speed and overtaking breaches within minutes, highlighting frequent violations by foreign‑registered trucks and those carrying inert materials. She criticised the lack of continuous monitoring, noting that the National Toll Authority now records offending trucks and forwards footage to the police.

The European Centre for Transport Policy warned that limited daytime operating hours of the Vehicle Administration exacerbate the problem. A recent fatal crash on 24 June near Yambol, involving a truck that ignored safety rules, killed three people, including two children, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated enforcement among the Toll Authority, police and the Vehicle Administration.
