Bulgaria records surge in drug arrests and seizures in May 2026
Data from the Specialized Interagency Unit of the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office and the Ministry of Interior show that 1,088 people were detained in May 2026 for drug‑related offences, up from 905 the previous month. The month saw 985 criminal investigations launched, compared with 783 in April, and the seizure of more than 362 kg of marijuana, over 1 kg of fentanyl, as well as cocaine and precursor chemicals.
Key police actions included a May 11 operation in Sofia that uncovered more than 1 kg of pure fentanyl, over 10 kg of fentanyl precursors, 340 g of marijuana and 47 g of cocaine in a residence, and a May 28 raid in the village of Chelopechene, Kabarna municipality, where an indoor cannabis grow‑room yielded 924 stems, over 3 kg of marijuana and cultivation equipment.
