Bulgaria inflation reaches 5.7% annually in September 2026
Bulgaria's annual inflation rate rose to 5.7% in September 2026, up from 5.1% the previous month, according to data from the National Statistical Institute. Despite the annual increase, the country recorded a monthly deflation of 0.2% compared to August.
Key drivers of the monthly price increases included transport (3.7%), educational services (3.2%), and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (1.1%). Within the food sector, potatoes saw a significant monthly spike of 36.5%, while cucumbers and zucchinis also increased in price. Conversely, prices for entertainment, sports, and culture fell by 10.2%, and restaurant and hotel services decreased by 1.1%.
Economists have warned that high inflation continues to erode the purchasing power of Bulgarian households and their savings. Concerns have also been raised regarding geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea and the Persian Gulf, which could impact energy supplies and international trade, potentially leading to further price volatility.
