Bulgaria, Romania and Spain Sign NATO Air‑Policing Agreement

The air forces of the Republic of Bulgaria, Romania and the Kingdom of Spain have signed a three‑nation technical agreement to conduct cross‑border NATO Air‑Policing missions. The pact, based on the 2021 bilateral treaty between Bulgaria and Romania, authorises Spanish fighter jets to join standing patrols over Romanian airspace, where they are currently deployed, and to operate in Bulgarian airspace when required. The arrangement is part of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS) and is intended to strengthen collective defence on the Alliance’s eastern flank.

The agreement expands the pool of available interceptors for NATO’s air‑security mission, enhancing the alliance’s ability to respond to potential violations of member airspace and contributing to overall regional stability.
