Romania expands anti‑drone defence
Entities: Russia · Odesa · Romania · Ukraine · Black Sea
Overview
Following the July NATO summit in Ankara, Romania intensified its maritime drone posture, intercepting five marine drones off Constanța in early July and launching a procurement programme for Triton autonomous maritime drones funded through the EU SAFE scheme. The new platforms, tested by the Coast Guard, are designed to detect submarines and floating mines up to 10 km away and bolster border security, migration control and anti‑smuggling efforts. This maritime push complements earlier requests for permanent anti‑drone systems and expanded naval de‑mining cooperation with Turkey and Bulgaria.
In June, the United States‑supplied MEROPS anti‑drone system was operationalised, creating a protected air‑space zone. The system’s claim of stopping any drone was challenged by former General Ștefan Dănilă, who warned that no technology can guarantee 100 % success and cautioned against false expectations.
Later in July, Russian drones entered Romanian airspace for four consecutive days, prompting F‑16 fighters to shoot down three of them with costly AIM‑9X missiles. The repeated incursions spurred calls for a more affordable counter‑UAV solution. Lockheed Martin’s MORFIUS™ X‑Rotor, a reusable system priced around $25,000 and capable of neutralising up to 50 drones per mission, is now under consideration. President Nicușor Dan linked the incursions to a broader hybrid threat targeting critical infrastructure and NATO cohesion, underscoring the urgency of cost‑effective defence measures.
