Bulgaria hit by widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms as yellow warning issued

A yellow weather warning was issued for almost the entire territory of Bulgaria on 2 July, forecasting intense rain, thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology warned of short‑term heavy downpours with temperatures ranging from the high‑20s to mid‑30s °C, and a risk of localized hail.

The storm caused significant disruption in the capital, Sofia, where heavy rain and hail flooded streets and underpasses, knocked down trees and branches, and briefly halted tram services. More than 100 emergency calls were recorded, and authorities mobilised fire crews, municipal teams and volunteers to clear debris and restore transport links. No injuries were reported.

Meteorologists said the atmospheric conditions would remain unstable over the next few days, with further short‑term showers and thunderstorm activity expected across many regions.
