Bulgaria strengthens regional security cooperation and addresses drone threats

Bulgaria is intensifying its security cooperation with regional partners to address evolving threats in the Black Sea region and at its external borders. In Warsaw, Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński agreed to deepen coordination regarding organized crime and migration pressure, emphasizing the need for professional contacts to protect EU external borders.

Addressing technological risks, former Defense Minister Todor Tagarev warned that drones are increasingly reaching the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. He noted that much of Bulgaria’s current air defense is designed for missile protection and consists of aging Soviet-era systems, suggesting a need for urgent modernization to counter unmanned aerial and maritime vehicles.

Simultaneously, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova expressed a commitment to collaborate with Romania to enhance maritime security. She highlighted the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub as a critical project and advocated for strategic infrastructure investments, such as the Vertical Gas Corridor and improved transport links, to bolster European economic and security resilience.
