Bulgarian regional and European security efforts
Overview
Bulgaria is intensifying its regional and European security efforts to address evolving defense challenges. Regionally, Bulgarian officials have deepened coordination with Poland and Romania to manage migration, organized crime, and maritime security in the Black Sea. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński emphasized the necessity of professional contacts to protect EU external borders. To bolster maritime security, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova has advocated for the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub and strategic infrastructure like the Vertical Gas Corridor.
A critical concern remains the modernization of air defense. Former Defense Minister Todor Tagarev warned that drones are increasingly reaching the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, noting that existing Soviet-era systems are primarily designed for missile protection rather than countering unmanned aerial and maritime vehicles.
On the European stage, Bulgaria is advocating for a stronger European Defence Agency (EDA) to enhance capability development and joint procurement. During EU Foreign Affairs/Defense Council meetings, Deputy Minister of Defense Lyubomir Monov stressed that European readiness requires increased investment and improved military mobility for the eastern flank. Monov also engaged in bilateral discussions with German parliamentary state secretary Sebastian Hartmann to accelerate joint projects under the SAFE instrument.
