Bulgaria submits 2027 draft budget plan to European Commission
Bulgaria has presented its draft budget plan for 2027 to the European Commission and the Eurogroup. This submission is part of the standard economic policy monitoring and coordination procedures for eurozone members.
The plan arrives as Bulgaria faces an excessive deficit procedure. According to Council decisions, the budget deficit is projected to be 3.5% of GDP in 2025 and 4.1% of GDP in 2026. The 2026 projection exceeds reference values, even when accounting for derogations related to defense spending, which triggered the excessive deficit procedure.
Economists note that managing the national deficit remains a primary challenge for the government and a key factor in political stability. The 2027 draft serves as an early indicator of the public finance framework for that year, preceding the standard domestic budgetary procedures.
