Bulgaria targets 8 million foreign tourists by 2030

Bulgaria's Minister of Tourism, Ilin Dimitrov, has announced a strategic goal to double the number of foreign tourists from approximately 4 million to 8 million annually by 2030. To achieve this, the Ministry is emphasizing the importance of organizing events outside the peak summer season to ensure year-round occupancy and economic stability.

A proposed decentralization model would require municipalities to invest up to 50 percent of collected tourism taxes into regional advertising and events. Additionally, a Connectivity and Advertising Fund is planned to support roadshows, B2B meetings, and engagement with tour operators in key markets.

Recent data for the period of January–July 2026 shows Bulgaria recorded 5.2 million tourists, consisting of 3 million Bulgarians and 2.2 million foreigners. While domestic tourism revenue rose by 18.1 percent to 360 million euros, foreign tourist revenue increased by 10.5 percent to 520 million euros. The Ministry aims to use legislative changes and increased event frequency to boost activity during the beginning and end of the summer season.
