Bulgarian tourism trends and travel patterns

Bulgarian tourism data and seasonal travel trends indicate growing interest in both domestic and international travel. National Statistical Institute (NSI) data shows that 1.3 million Bulgarian citizens traveled during the second quarter of 2026, a 4.4% increase from the previous year. Average personal travel expenditure rose to 190.30 euros for domestic trips and 480.63 euros for travel abroad, with food remaining the primary expense.

In July 2026, over one million Bulgarians traveled abroad, a 3.1% increase from July 2025, with Greece and Turkey being the most popular destinations. Conversely, foreign visits to Bulgaria reached nearly 2 million in July, a 1.2% decrease from the previous year.

Summer trends highlight a move toward spontaneous mountain escapes to avoid urban heat. Destinations like Bansko, featuring ‘Ultra All Inclusive’ concepts and thermal experiences, and the Rhodope Mountains, known for hiking and gastronomic tourism, remain popular.

Regarding industry recovery and labor, Minister of Tourism Ilin Dimitrov reported that the sector is recovering to previous levels despite a difficult start to the summer. A significant factor is the return of the German market, with an additional 100,000 to 150,000 flight seats negotiated for the next season, representing a 25-30% increase. To support peak months, the Employment Agency registered 18,658 seasonal employment permits for third-country nationals in 2025, primarily concentrated in the Burgas, Varna, Pazardzhik, and Dobrich regions.

In aviation, Balkan Skyways is preparing to launch regular international flights from Plovdiv Airport in the 2027 summer season, targeting routes in Germany, Spain, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, and Turkey.
