Bulgaria announces social support measures and family benefit increases

Bulgarian officials have announced several social and economic support measures to combat inflation and support vulnerable populations. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Alexander Pulev stated that 300 million euros have been allocated for support, including a 30 million euro fund for the most vulnerable via a one-time 50 euro ‘inflation check’. The remaining resources target key economic sectors such as transport, logistics, energy-intensive industry, and agriculture.

Labor Minister Natalia Efremova has proposed significant increases to family benefits and maternity allowances to be included in the 2027 budget. This proposal, requiring an additional 300 million euros, includes raising one-time birth grants, increasing monthly child support payments, and providing tax relief for families. Specific proposals include increasing monthly support for children under one year old by 48 euros and raising disability support for those with the highest degree of impairment to 704 euros per month.

Additionally, the government has begun distributing financial aid to approximately 500,000 people through the inflation check system. Other measures include the removal of excise duties on propane-butane and natural gas for vehicles to lower fuel costs, and the scheduled distribution of Christmas pension supplements in November.
