Bulgaria tourism strategy focuses on food, wine, and tax reform
Bulgarian Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov has outlined several strategic initiatives to enhance the country's competitiveness. Speaking at a conference in Plovdiv, Dimitrov emphasized that the tourism sector must prioritize the promotion of high-quality local food and indigenous wine varieties to attract international visitors.
To improve revenue and oversight, the Ministry plans to integrate short-term accommodation listings into the Unified Tourism Information System (ESTI). This move is expected to increase tourist tax collections. Dimitrov stated that starting next year, 50% of these tax revenues will be allocated toward coordination and decentralized advertising, potentially providing 15-20 million euros for regional promotion.
Other key developments include the establishment of an Association of Higher Education Institutions for tourism training and the launch of an Observatory for Quality and Sustainability of the Tourism Product to provide data-driven sector assessments. Additionally, Bulgaria is preparing to host a UN Tourism forum on cultural tourism and education in Kazanlak in late May of next year.
