Bulgarian hospitals collaborate to perform cochlear implant on child
Specialists from the Military Medical Academy (VMA) and the National Cardiology Hospital (NKB) in Bulgaria successfully performed a cochlear implantation on a three-year-old child with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.
The procedure was complicated by the patient's underlying heart condition, Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, which increased the risks associated with general anesthesia. To mitigate these risks, medical teams collaborated to place a temporary pacemaker before the surgery. The implantation was led by Professor Dr. Ventsislav Tsvetkov and his team from the VMA Clinic for Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases.
The VMA has a 20-year history of performing cochlear implantations, having completed over 300 such procedures in that timeframe.
