Cochlear implant medical service developments

Overview

In Greece, the Cochlear Implant Center at the University Hospital of Larissa has suspended its operations for both adults and children. During a parliamentary debate, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis stated that the center lacks required adjustment equipment and suitable training spaces, claiming safety and operational requirements have not been met since its recognition.

This suspension has faced criticism from MP Alexandros Meikopoulos, who noted that the Ministry and KESY had officially recognized the center as meeting all requirements in December 2023, and that a successful implantation occurred in 2024. Additionally, questions have been raised regarding a May 2026 request to replace the center’s scientific supervisor, Professor Charalambos Skoulas, with the Director of the ENT Clinic.
