Bulgarian households face rising autumn costs amid inflation
Bulgarian households are facing increased financial pressure as autumn approaches, driven by a combination of rising utility, fuel, and food costs. While there is no single massive price hike scheduled for September 1, the accumulation of smaller increases is expected to impact family budgets.
Data from the National Statistical Institute indicates that annual inflation stood at 4.5% in July, with prices rising 3.7% since the start of the year. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels saw a 2% increase in July compared to June. As temperatures drop, increased consumption of electricity and gas is expected to drive up monthly bills, even if tariffs remain unchanged.
In the food sector, while overall food and non-alcoholic beverage prices decreased by 1% in July compared to June, certain items are trending upward. Specifically, beef prices rose by 3.9%, onions by 3.1%, and fresh or chilled fish by 2.7%. Additionally, while fuel prices saw slight decreases in July, volatility in oil markets remains a risk that could increase transportation costs and subsequently impact food and service prices.
