Delian Dobrev to quit Bulgaria's parliament next week

Long‑time GERB‑SDS MP Delian Dobrev announced that he will resign from the National Assembly within a week, saying it is time for younger members to take on leadership roles. Speaking to the party’s youth organization in Rakovski, Dobrev said, “I have been in politics for 20 years … we must give way to the young.” He added that he will remain active in the party and thanked leader Boyko Borisov for his support.

Dobrev also urged stricter fiscal discipline, warning that “fiscal consolidation is needed now” to avoid a rapid rise in the debt‑to‑GDP ratio. He recalled that under the first Borisov cabinet the public debt was about 20 % of GDP and inflation averaged around 1 %, among the lowest in Europe.

His resignation marks the departure of a senior figure who has held positions ranging from municipal councilor to minister and chaired both the energy and budget committees.
