Bulgaria parties push unity, DSB shift, BSP lagging

Entities: Dimitar Nikolov · GERB · Boyko Borisov · Primorsko

Overview

The Democratic Bulgaria (DSB) coalition confirmed Radan Kunev as chairman, positioning DSB as a centrist anchor for a unified right‑wing opposition and urging a single presidential candidate while rejecting a joint ticket with GERD. GERB leader Boyko Borisov continued to call for right‑wing forces to rally behind one contender, and in early August he praised Burgas mayor Dimitar Nikolov as GERB’s most successful mayor, showcasing a cadre‑building forum in Primorsko. Borisov hinted that several participants could become presidential candidates, linking the discussion to the upcoming election, the 2026 euro adoption and a tougher economic outlook.

On the left, BSP chairman Kaloyan Pargov reiterated on 18 July that the party is lagging in presidential‑election preparations and that the incumbent president remains the most suitable candidate. He linked internal disagreements to the recent Kyiv declaration and warned that minor mismatches could evolve into larger scandals, while also highlighting ongoing foreign‑policy debates over U.S. aircraft deliveries and Sofia Airport modernization.

Both blocs remain engaged in negotiations over a common candidate for the autumn vote, with internal cohesion and foreign‑policy alignment continuing to shape the political landscape.
