Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates Euthymius the New and Lucian of Antioch

On October 15, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors Venerable Euthymius the New (of Thessaloniki) and Saint Martyr-Venerable Lucian of Antioch.

Euthymius, born around 823 AD in Galatia, transitioned from family life to monasticism, living in monasteries on Mount Olympus in Bithynia and later as a hermit on Mount Athos. He founded a monastery near Thessaloniki and is recognized for his asceticism and spiritual mentorship.

Lucian of Antioch, a priest from the 3rd-4th century, was a scholar and founder of a theological school in Antioch. He contributed to the correction and transcription of Holy Scripture. He was martyred in Nicomedia in 312 AD during the persecutions under Emperor Maximinus Daia.

According to folk traditions, the weather on this day serves as an indicator for the upcoming winter. Rain and wind suggest a harsh winter, while clear skies may indicate early frost. Pale stars at night are believed to signal a mild winter.
