Commemoration of Saint Lucian of Antioch

Overview

The Orthodox calendar commemorates Saint Lucian of Antioch on October 15. A priest from Samosata, Syria, Lucian was known for his scholarship, establishing schools in Antioch, and his work in transcribing and correcting Holy Scripture into Greek.

During the persecutions led by Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, Lucian traveled to Nicomedia to preach. He was eventually imprisoned and died there after declaring his faith. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church also honors Saint Lucian alongside Venerable Euthymius the New on this date. In certain folk traditions, the weather on October 15 is used to predict the severity of the upcoming winter.
