Bulgarian police increase patrols and restrict truck traffic for long weekend
Bulgarian police are increasing patrols and implementing traffic restrictions to manage heavy congestion expected during the long Independence Day weekend. Increased traffic is anticipated on the Struma Motorway and the E-79 main road, particularly for travelers heading toward or returning from Greece.
To alleviate pressure on the road network, the Road Infrastructure Agency has issued an order restricting heavy goods vehicle (HGV) movement between 12:00 and 20:00. This restriction applies to trucks traveling toward Sofia after 12:00, though exceptions are made for vehicles transporting perishable goods, live animals, or dangerous goods.
Senior Inspector Georgi Buchkov of the Blagoevgrad Road Police noted that additional teams, including motorcycle patrols, will be deployed to respond quickly to incidents and regulate traffic flow. Authorities will also conduct heightened speed limit enforcement to address common violations observed throughout the summer.
