Bulgarian politician Atanas Atanasov resigns as DSB chair while staying active in politics

Deputy Speaker of Bulgaria’s National Assembly and former chairman of the Democratic Bulgaria (DSB) coalition, Atanas Atanasov, announced he will step down from the party’s leadership after serving two terms. He said the move follows a Western democratic tradition of rotation and that he will continue to work on national security and foreign‑policy issues. Atanasov warned that “the biggest threat to Bulgarian national security is the war in Ukraine” and criticised Prime Minister Rumen Radev for what he called a double‑standard approach toward the conflict. He also accused recent appointments to the special services of concentrating power in a narrow circle linked to the premier, citing staffing shortages at the State Agency for National Security. The former DSB chair urged a temporary parliamentary commission to investigate the alleged flight‑related case involving businessman Delian Peevski.
