Bulgarian Prosecutors Order Road Safety Investigation After Fatal Truck Crash Near Mало Бучино

On Thursday, June 25, a truck belonging to AM “Struma” broke a safety barrier and collided with an oncoming car near the village of Mало Бучино in Bulgaria, resulting in three fatalities. The Sofia District Prosecutor's Office has ordered a comprehensive examination of the road segment, including the surface condition, markings, traffic signs, and the state of the safety barriers (mantinelas).

Investigators have already inspected the site and interviewed witnesses. They have requested documents from the Road Infrastructure Agency and the regional road administration concerning the construction date, recent repairs, maintenance contracts, and accident records for the past five years. A complex technical, transport‑technical and road‑engineering expertise will be appointed to determine the truck’s speed, possible overload, impact angle, and whether the installed barrier met required standards.

Minister of Regional Development Ivan Shishkov has also ordered a review of the materials used for safety barriers on the Trakia and Struma motorways, where serious accidents have occurred this week. The investigation is ongoing.
