Bulgaria tourism faces debate over rising Black Sea prices

The Bulgarian tourism sector is facing significant debate regarding rising costs along the Black Sea coast. Industry representatives are divided on whether price hikes are threatening the country's competitiveness.

Dimitar Popov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Association for Sustainable Tourism, warned that price increases for basic items like coffee and water are often nearly double the rate of increases seen in neighboring Greece. He noted that these costs are driving long-term visitors to alternative destinations like Austria.

In contrast, Richard Alibegov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Restaurants, defended the industry. He argued that the coast offers a wide range of prices for different budgets and that high-priced items, such as a 10-euro tarator in a five-star hotel, do not represent the entire market. Alibegov suggested that some critics use isolated expensive receipts to create a misleading narrative about the impact of the euro.

Meanwhile, hotel operators in northern coastal areas like Varna report a weaker season, with tourists staying for shorter periods due to price sensitivity. Some hotel owners have noted that while they remain profitable, profit margins are shrinking as expenses rise faster than revenue.
