Bulgaria’s Trakia Highway gridlocked by repair work

A massive traffic jam has formed on the Trakia highway heading toward Plovdiv as a result of ongoing road repairs. The congestion begins before the 33‑km mark and is caused by extensive reconstruction of the carriageway between kilometres 33 and 39 in the Sofia region. During the works, traffic is being routed two‑way on the Sofia lane, with the Road Infrastructure Agency (API) adjusting the temporary traffic scheme in stages to ease the bottleneck.

The repairs are part of a larger programme to renew key sections of the Trakia motorway, with plans to complete works in the Sofia, Stara Zagora and Yambol regions by the end of June. On 19 June, traffic was fully restored on a previously repaired stretch in the Pazardzhik region (km 55‑60) after a two‑week preventive overhaul. Drivers have been urged to proceed with caution, follow the temporary traffic arrangements and allow extra travel time, especially on weekends.
