Bumiputera Education Equity Fund proposed for Malaysia

A proposal has been made to establish a Bumiputera Education Equity Fund to support the growth of Bumiputera-owned private education companies. This follows the Ministry of Education's decision to abolish the requirement for private higher education institutions (IPS) to maintain at least 30 per cent Bumiputera equity ownership.

Dr. Anuar Ahmad, Deputy Director of the Institute for Inclusive Development Malaysia (MINDA UKM), suggested that the fund could include an initial allocation of approximately RM100 million in the 2027 Budget. The fund is intended to help Bumiputera companies compete, invest in potential firms, and facilitate the acquisition of existing educational institutions through joint investment schemes involving the government, financial institutions, and private investors.

Dr. Anuar noted that future educational ownership should expand beyond physical campuses to include technology, data, digital content, and intellectual property, specifically targeting sectors like artificial intelligence and digital learning platforms.
