Bundesbank proposes integrating Wero with digital euro
The Deutsche Bundesbank has proposed integrating the digital euro with Wero, a European mobile payment alternative developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), to increase European sovereignty in digital payments. Lutz Lienenkämper, a member of the Bundesbank Executive Board, suggested that embedding the digital euro into the Wero wallet could expand the reach of European payment solutions and ensure they work seamlessly together rather than competing.
Wero, which functions similarly to PayPal, currently has approximately 57 million registered users across Germany, France, and Belgium, with expansions planned for the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Austria. While the digital euro is being developed by the European Central Bank with a target introduction of 2029, the Bundesbank emphasizes that strengthening existing European infrastructure like Wero is essential to reduce dependence on US-based providers such as PayPal, Mastercard, and Visa.
