Bundesnetzagentur plans grid fee reform to lower costs for consumers
The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) is working on a reform of electricity grid fees that is expected to take effect on January 1, 2029. According to Agency President Klaus Müller, the new regulations could lead to a slight decrease in electricity prices for pure consumers who do not produce their own power.
Under the proposed reform, electricity 'prosumers'—individuals who use private photovoltaic systems to feed solar power into the grid during summer but draw power during winter—will be required to pay a higher base price for grid fees. Müller stated that the reform aims to ensure a fairer distribution of costs, noting that the current system allows households with their own solar production to be partially excluded from the solidarity community of grid fee payers, even though the grid must be financed year-round.
