Bundeswehr engineers assist Poland with Eastern Shield fortifications
German Bundeswehr engineers are currently assisting Poland with the construction of the ‘Eastern Shield’ (Ostschild), a massive defense project designed to fortify Poland’s eastern borders. The mission involves deploying combat engineers to install tank barriers, dig trenches, and set up barbed wire to prevent incursions.
The project is a response to the ongoing war in Ukraine and aims to secure approximately 700 kilometers of the border with Belarus and Russia by 2028. Poland has allocated roughly ten billion euros to this initiative and is currently spending nearly five percent of its GDP on defense, the highest rate among NATO members.
The German military involvement is an official mission scheduled to run until at least October 2026, with the possibility of extension. Major General Tilo Maedler stated that the visible presence of these forces serves as a clear message regarding NATO’s readiness.
