Bundeswehr engineers assist Poland with Eastern Shield fortifications

German Bundeswehr engineers are currently deployed in Poland to assist with the construction of the Eastern Shield, a large-scale fortification project designed to secure the border against potential Russian aggression. The mission involves building anti-tank obstacles, such as concrete barriers, digging anti-tank trenches, and establishing supply depots along sensitive border sections, including the area near the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

The Eastern Shield is a multi-billion euro initiative by the Polish government, with approximately 10 billion euros allocated to the project. Poland's defense spending has risen to nearly five percent of its economic output, the highest among NATO members. The German contingent, which has been on-site since late June, is expected to continue its mission until mid-October 2026, after which it will be replaced by French forces.
